Digital Gold Rush Fuels Surge in Nevada Political Spending

October 27, 2026 • 2 min read

Nevada is seeing a significant uptick in political contributions from companies tied to the state’s booming data center industry, signaling a shift in how these tech giants interact with lawmakers. According to a recent analysis by the Nevada Independent, firms with a data center footprint in the state contributed more than 100 thousand dollars to candidates and groups between July and September, marking the highest quarterly total in eight years. This surge comes as the industry prepares for a legislative session where it will likely face unprecedented scrutiny regarding its environmental impact and tax advantages.

While several global tech titans like Google and Microsoft operate in the state, the vast majority of this financial influence stems from Switch, a dominant player with massive campuses in Las Vegas and Reno. A particularly striking development occurred recently when Jessica Roy, wife of Switch founder Rob Roy, donated one million dollars to a political action committee supporting Governor Joe Lombardo. This represents a sharp pivot for the company, which historically leaned toward Democratic candidates but is now investing heavily in the current Republican administration as it views certain Democratic policy proposals as threats to economic growth.

The timing of these donations coincides with growing tension over how data centers utilize state resources. Attorney General Aaron Ford has made reigning in the industry a central part of his platform, pledging to pause existing tax breaks and ban specific water intensive cooling technologies. While Governor Lombardo has described the arrival of these facilities as a modern gold rush for Nevada, he has already begun curtailing some tax reliefs to ensure local schools receive better funding. These conflicting visions have turned data centers into a primary flashpoint in state politics.

Industry experts suggest that this increase in spending reflects a maturing relationship between big tech and government regulation. Ken Miller, a political science professor at UNLV, notes that industries often ramp up their donations when they reach a point where maintaining current regulations becomes critical for survival. For years, data centers operated largely beneath the radar or relied on broad tax incentives; however, as they become larger targets for environmentalists and budget hawks, they are finding it necessary to treat political contributions as an essential form of corporate maintenance.
